A whiplash injury generally refers to a sudden jolt of the neck in one direction and immediately another in the opposite direction, similar to cracking a whip. This is often seen in victims of motor vehicle accidents and contact sports.
The Whiplash is characterized by a collection of symptoms that occur following damage to the neck. These includes,
1.Neck pain and stiffness
3.Pain in the shoulders or in between shoulder blades
4.Low back pain
6.Difficulty concentrating or remembering
7.Irritability, sleep disturbances and fatigue
These symptoms may be delayed 24 hours or more after the initial trauma. Without proper attention, the condition can develop into chronic neck pains and in severe cases, blurred visions and tinnitus.
The whiplash causes the ligaments responsible of supporting the head and preventing excessive movements to be torn, known as a sprain. In addition, the muscles and tendons are strained—stretched beyond their normal limits. The discs between the vertebrae, which are essentially ligaments, can also be torn, potentially causing a disc herniation. The nerve roots between the vertebrae may also be stretched and become inflamed causing unbearable discomfort for the patient.
Do not hesitate to contact us if the symptoms spread to your shoulders and arms and if moving your head is painful, or if you have numbness or weakness in your arms.
How we can help
The Chiropractor will examine the spine as a whole even if the patient specified pain in the neck resulting from an external trauma. Through that, the chiropractor would spot any areas of restricted joint motion, intervertebral disc injury, muscle spasm, and ligament injury by feeling for tenderness, tightness, and how well your spinal joints move. The chiropractor would also examine your walk to identify any spinal misalignment.
After the diagnosis, the doctor might employ treatments such as spinal manipulations, therapeutic massages, electrical stimulation and/or manual stretching exercises. Every Whiplash is different. Thus, should you have the misfortune to need professional help, do not hesitate to contact us.
